WHERE ARE THE DANCERS

IF YOU VISIT WILD WEDNESDAYS AT THE MOHEGAN SUN YOU MAY NOTICE SOMETHING IS DIFFERENT FROM PREVIOUS YEARS,

THE TRIBAL DANCERS ARE NOT DANCING ANYMORE.

AS I REMEMBER AND I COULD BE WRONG, WHEN ASKED ABOUT THIS SITUATION AT THE QUARTERLY MEETING IN JULY 2008, WE WERE TOLD BY A MEMBER OF THE TRIBAL COUNCIL THAT WE HAVE NO ONE TO DO IT. THEN ANOTHER MEMBER OF THE TRIBAL COUNCIL ASKED DOES ANYONE WANT TO VOLUNTEER TO DO IT?.

AS I REMEMBER IT AND AGAIN I COULD BE WRONG, SHANE LONG HAD JUST GIVEN A PASSIONATE APPEAL TO THE TRIBE SAYING HE WAS NEVER CONVICTED OF ANYTHING AND THAT EVEN THOUGH HE FELT WRONGED BY THE TRIBE HE WAS STILL WILLING TO HELP THE TRIBE IN ANY CAPACITY THAT IT WANTED HIM TO.

THE INTERESTING FACT ABOUT THIS IS THAT SHANE LONG WAS THE CHIEF DANCER AT THE WILD WEDNESDAY EVENTS.

THIS IS A CASE OF THE TAIL WAGGING THE DOG. IF THIS WAS A BUSINESS, THE BOSSES (IN THIS CASE THE COUNCIL OF ELDERS) WOULD ORDER THE SUBORDINATES TO MAKE IT HAPPEN AND IT WOULD.

I URGE THE TRIBAL COUNCIL AND THE COUNCIL OF ELDERS TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN.
IT IS A GOOD WAY FOR PEOPLE TO RELATE AND COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER.
THE GENERAL PUBLIC SEEMED TO ENJOY IT AND THE MOHEGAN DANCERS ALSO LOVED TO DO IT. BRING BACK THE DANCING.

There is more to the story of no dancing on the roof top. The venue really sucks. The dancers are margenalized, over to the side. The bands up front drown them out, there are tribal kids and other kids running around and climbing on the walls. Someone will fall to their death. There is also quite a bit of intoxication. It is also during pow-wow season when everyone in the department is very busy. It means loading up the speakers into the van every Wednesday and setting up in the most horrible of the heat on the rooftop during the most busy time of the year. Nobody ever showed any appreciation for the effort. Shane just got used like a trained monkey. He didn't want to share "his show" so no one else has picked it up yet...but I'm sure someone else will if given the chance. His show was just to put a cultural facade on the business for the public and when he was unable to work any longer, it just died. Shame on the Councils, and all of us, for worrying more about "what looks good" than getting someone the "help" that he really needs!
