UPDATE: STONE WALLS AT FORT HILL

RECENTLY AFTER WE WROTE THE STORY ABOUT THE STONE WALLS AT FORT HILL ELDER HOUSING, SOME NEW FACTS CAME TO LIGHT.

IN 1999, THE MOHEGAN ARCHAEOLOGY CLASS WAS DIGGING TEST PITS TO MAKE SURE IT WAS OKAY FOR THE DRIVEWAY TO BE PUT IN GOING FROM ROUTE 32 TO THE FRONT OF THE FUTURE FORT HILL HOUSING BUILDING. SOMEONE LOOKED AT THE PLANS AND DISCOVERED THEY WERE GOING TO PUT THE DRIVEWAY RIGHT THROUGH WHERE THE STONE WALLS WERE.

THE CLASS CLEARED AWAY THE VINES AND FOLIAGE THAT WAS COVERING UP THE STONE WALL.

THE COUNCIL OF ELDERS WERE CALLED AND THEY CAME DOWN TO SEE THE STONE WALLS. THEY SAID THIS MUST BE SAVED. THE COUNCIL OF ELDERS THEN DID WHAT WAS NEEDED TO SAVE THE WALL.

THE HOUSING OFFICIAL AT THE TIME SAID HE DID NOT EVEN KNOW THE WALL WAS THERE. HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN? HOW DO PLANS CALL FOR GOING THROUGH A STONE WALL? HOW COME NO ONE KNEW? WHAT OTHER THINGS HAVE HAPPENED LIKE THIS?
