EYES ON THE OUTSIDE

IT IS RUMORED THAT ABOUT FIFTY YEARS AGO WHEN A CONSTRUCTION CREW WAS BUILDING AN ON RAMP ON I-395 , A NATIVE AMERICAN BURIAL GROUND WAS DISCOVERED. EVERY ONE AT THE SITE KEPT QUIET. YEARS LATER WHEN THE STORY CAME OUT NOTHING WAS FOUND.

SEVERAL YEARS AGO, A LAND OWNER WAS HAVING A CUSTOM HOUSE BEING BUILT ON MASONS ISLAND. THE HOMEOWNER THOUGHT THAT THEY MAY HAVE UNCOVERED HUMAN REMAINS. HE CONTACTED HIS LAWYER WHO TOLD HIM TO GO TO THE AUTHORITIES, WHICH HE DID . THE MASHANTUCKET PEQUOTS BOUGHT THE PROPERY AND PRESERVED WHAT WAS LEFT OF THE NATIVE AMERICAN BURIALS.

HOW MANY OTHER THINGS LIKE THIS, THAT INVOLVE NATIVE AMERICAN SITES COULD THERE POSSIBLY BE OUT THERE? HOW MANY WILL BE FOUND IN THE FUTURE?

I BELIEVE THE MOHEGAN TRIBE NEEDS SOMEONE TO PROTECT POSSIBLE SITES THAT ARE STILL OUT THERE.

THE PERSON THAT WOULD DO THIS SHOULD HAVE SOME ARCHAEOLOGY TRAINING AND CONSTRUCTION EXPERIENCE. HE WOULD DEAL WITH THE LOCAL TOWN BUILDING DEPARTMENTS AND MAYBE THE STATE OF CONNECTICUT. HE COULD CHECK CONSTRUCTION SITES AND SEE WHAT IS GOING ON. IF HE FOUND SOMETHING HE COULD CALL THE TRIBES' ARCHAEOLOGISTS AND HAVE THEM LOOK AT THE SITE.

FROM THERE THE TRIBE COULD DO WHATEVER IS NEEDED TO PROTECT THE SITE.

HOPEFULLY THERE WILL NEVER AGAIN BE INCIDENTS LIKE I-395 OR MASONS ISLAND.
