ON A RECENT TRIP TO FORT SHANTOK WE DISCOVERED THAT THEY ARE BUILDING A RETAINING WALL JUST WEST OF SHANTOK BURIAL GROUND AND THE SHANTOK BROOK. WE WERE TOLD IT IS BEING DONE BECAUSE OF EROSION.
THE CONSTRUCTION CREW IS DOING A GREAT JOB. IN MAKING THE RETAINING WALL, THEY ARE PUTTING IN RAIL ROAD TIES AND PUTTING IN BRACES CALLED DEAD MEN TO MAKE IT STRONG. BEHIND THE RAIL ROAD TIES WALLS THEY WILL FILL WITH STONES TO HELP WITH WATER RUN OFF SO THAT IN WINTER ICE WILL NOT PUSH OUT THE WALLS.
ACROSS THE BROOK THEY ARE PUTTING A CUSTOM MADE BRIDGE LIKE THEY DID ON THE NORTH WEST PART OF SHANTOK POND. THEY WILL MAKE TWO (2) CEMENT BASES ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BROOK AND PICK UP THE BRIDGE AND PUT IT IN PLACE.
THE WORK IS COMING ALONG GREAT. WHEN IT IS COMPLETED IT SHOULD BE QUITE NICE. IT WILL BE FUN TO WALK ON AND ENJOY.
AT THE BRIDGE NORTHWEST OF SHANTOK POND, GRAFFITI WAS FOUND ON THE RAILINGS.
EDITORIAL NOTE: THE TREES DOWN IN SHANTOK POND STILL HAVE NOTE BEEN REMOVED.
