WE ASKED THE COUNCIL OF ELDERS ABOUT A PIECE OF LAND THAT IS BEING EXCAVATED AT THE SOUTHEAST CORNER OF CROW HILL ROAD AND ROUTE 32 INTERSECTION, IN UNCASVILLE.
BROKENWING EDITORIALS WAS TOLD BY ANOYMOUS SOURCE THAT THE ARCHAEOLOGY DEPARTMENT OF THE MOHEGAN TRIBE NEVER DID ANY WORK ON THE PROPERTY IN QUESTION.
AT FIRST, ONE OF THE COUNCIL OF ELDERS SAID THEY HAD. THEN ANOTHER ONE SAID THEY HAD NOT. I REALLY DO NOT THINK IT MATTERS BECAUSE THERE WAS A HOUSE THERE . THERE IS ALSO WALL ON ROUTE 32. IT LOOKS LIKE EVERYTHING IS DISTURBED ANYWAY.
HERE IS THE TECHNICALITY, IF CONSTRUCTION IS DONE ON THE RESERVATION, THEN IT HAS TO HAVE AN ARCHAEOLICAL SURVEY (TEST PITS) DONE. A REPORT IS SENT TO THE COUNCIL OF ELDERS FOR THEM TO SIGN OFF ON, AND THEN CONSTRUCTION CAN BE DONE. IF THE PROPERTY IS NOT IN TRUST (PART OF THE RESERVATION) THEN NO ARCHAEOLIGAL STUDY IS NECESSARY.
THIS TECHNICALITY SHOULD BE LOOKED AT AND FIXED.
EDITORIAL UPDATE: I HAVE BEEN INFORMED BY SOMEONE WHO KNOWS ABOUT ACHAEOLOGY, THAT EVEN THOUGH THE AREA IN QUESTION WAS DISTURBED, SOMETHING COULD STILL HAVE BEEN FOUND. NOW IT IS LOST FOREVER.
