ON SUNDAY AUGUST 31, 2008, THE BALLOT COUNT WAS DONE FOR THE COUNCIL OF ELDERS ELECTION. THERE WERE 449 VOTES, 2 WERE NOT VALID, SO IN THE END THEY COUNTED 447.
HERE IS THE BREAK DOWN, FROM HIGHEST VOTE GETTER TO THE LOWEST:
1) STEPHANIE FIELDING ******* 274
2) WILLIAM ANDREWS ********* 247
3) SHARON MAYNARD **********228
4) LAURENCE ROBERGE ********222
5} CHARLIE STRICKLAND *******213
6) ROBERTA HARRIS-PAYNE*****197
7) DORI MONTGOMERY *********195
8) KURT EICHELBERG ***********188
TO THE WINNERS CONGRATULATIONS.
AT LEAST THREE PEOPLE HAD TO BRING IN THEIR BALLOTS ON SUNDAY BEFORE NINE A. M. TO HAVE THEIR BALLOTS COUNTED BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT BUILDING CLOSED AT TWELVE P.M. FRIDAY AUGUST 29, 2008. THIS IS GOING TO BE A PROBLEM FOR A LONG TIME TO COME BECAUSE THE CONSTITUTION SAYS THAT THE BALLOTS MUST BE COUNTED ON THE LAST SUNDAY IN AUGUST, WHICH WILL ALWAYS LAND ON LABOR DAY WEEKEND. THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD LEAVE SECURITY AT THE GOVERNMENT ENTRANCE UNTIL AT LEAST FIVE P.M., SO THAT TRIBAL MEMBERS WISHING TO VOTE CAN GET TO THE BALLOT BOX WITHOUT COMING IN SPECIAL ON SUNDAY MORNING BECAUSE OF THE GOVERNMENT CLOSED EARLY.
NEXT YEAR FIVE MEMBERS OF THE TRIBAL COUNCIL WILL BE UP FOR ELECTION. NOW IS THE TIME TO START WATCHING THE INCUMBENTS AND SEE WHAT THEY ARE DOING.
