IT HAS COME TO MY ATTENTION THAT THE MOHEGAN COUNCIL OF ELDERS CUT THE MONEY BEING SPENT ON THE LANGUAGE PROGRAM BY SIXTY PERCENT.
ONE PERSON IN THE LOOP SAID THAT IT WAS CUT BECAUSE OF LACK OF PARTICIPATION BY TRIBAL MEMBERS IN THE PROGRAM.
UPON CONTACTING ONE OF THE COUNCIL OF ELDERS HE STATED THAT IS WAS INDEED TRUE THAT THE BUDGET FOR THE PROGRAM HAD BEEN CUT. HE STATED IT WOULD BE UP TO THE NEW COUNCIL OF ELDERS TO DECIDE WHAT TO DO WITH THE PROGRAM. HE WAS ASKED TO HAVE THE ELDERS SEND TO ME A STATEMENT ON WHAT THEIR POSITION IS ON THIS MATTER. HE SAID HE WOULD. TO BE FAIR IT WAS ASKED ONLY THIS MORNING AND IT MAY TAKE SOMETIME FOR THE COUNCIL OF ELDERS TO RESPOND.
THE PRESENT COUNCIL ELDERS DID A VERY GOOD THING STARTING THIS PROGRAM BUT IT IS DISHEARTNING THAT THIS IS HAPPENING.
MY POSITION IS THAT IF SEVERAL OF OUR MEMBERS CAN BECOME FLUENT IN THE MOHEGAN LANGUAGE THEN IT WILL BE WORTH DOING. WE ARE TALKING THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO A TRIBE THAT HAS A GOVERNMENT BUDGET OF ONE HUNDRED AND FOURTEEN MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR.

The problem is is that many people were eager to come to th classes, but only a few show up! People want to have the language but they don't want to put the workinto it that they need to. A language reflects a people's culture and the way a people view their world. We lost our language not by our own choice. We owe it to our ancestors to reclaim amd restore what is rightfully ours. Stephanie is a very dedicated individual and has studied and worked very hard to bring the language back to us. We need to do our part to make this come true.
The Elders do not know who is or who is not studying on their own. Do you use your phrase book? Do you use your cd's? Do you have other ideas that the Elders could use to help promote the lanquage? Contact them and let them know how you feel and how they can help you and your children learn MOHEGAN!
