Mashantucket, Conn. — .A Norwich man was in critical condition Saturday night at Hartford Hospital, the victim of multiple gunshot wounds he suffered at a private party at a home on the Mashantucket Pequot Reservation.

State police said Elison Canuto of Norwich was attending a party at 3 Ann Wampey Drive. During the party, Canuto was approached outside by a man who shot him several times with a handgun at close range, police said. The shooter immediately fled the scene, police said.

State police said they received a call about the incident at 12:43 a.m. and responded immediately, finding a large party going on at the residence.

Several friends of Canuto already had taken him by car to The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich, police said. He later was transferred to Hartford Hospital for emergency surgery and remains hospitalized there.

Detectives from the Eastern District Major Crime Squad are investigating the shooting. They searched the area for the suspect without success. Troopers found a handgun they believe was used in the shooting a short distance away, police said.

Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to call police at 1-800-953-7747 or (860) 848-6548. Calls will be kept confidential.

EDITORIAL FOOTNOTE: Did this happen on the Mashantucket Pequot Reservation? The people were still partying after the man was shot? Nobody saw anything? How safe is it on the reservation? How safe is it on the Mohegan Reservation? Could this happen on the Mohegan Reservation? What do you think?

THESE ARE THE OPINIONS OF BROKENWING.
