YOU JUST TURNED 55 YEARS OLD AND THE MOHEGAN CONSTITUTION SAYS YOU ARE AND ELDER. THE CONSTITUTION, ARTICLE VI - ELECTIONS SECTION 2 -- "IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR AND SEEK ELECTION TO A POSITION ON THE COUNCIL OF ELDERS, A PERSON: (a) MUST BE AT LEAST 55 YEARS OF AGE PRIOR TO THE DATE OF THE ELECTION."
ACCORDING TO THE CONSTITUTION YOU ARE AN ELDER AND ABLE TO RUN FOR A POSITION ON THE COUNCIL OF ELDERS. WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO AT 55 AS AN ELDER ? THE WAY I SEE IT, ALMOST NOTHING.
YOU NEED TO BE 62 TO LIVE AT FORT HILL ASSISTED LIVING HOUSING. IT WAS ORIGINALLY 55 AND ELDER HOUSING, BUT IT HAS BEEN CHANGED IN MY OPINION WITHOUT ANY INPUT FROM THE TRIBAL MEMBERS LIVING AT FORT HILL .
AT 62 YOU GET THE PURPLE MEAL CARD, WHICH ALLOWS THE ELDER AND THEIR GUEST TO HAVE TWO MEALS A WEEK AT FIDELIA'S, BIRCHES BAR AND GRILL, SUNBURST BUFFET OR EARTH CASINO BUFFET.
ANOTHER THING YOU GET AT AGE 62 IS A SCHLAGE THAT ALLOWS YOU TO PARK IN TRIBAL PARKING IN THE RIVER VIEW GARAGE AT THE CASINO.
ALSO A TRIBAL MEMEBER HAS TO BE 62 TO GO ON ELDER TRIPS, IT USED TO BE 55. IF YOU WERE BETWEEN 55 AND 62 YEARS OLD WHEN THEY PASSED THIS ORDINANCE ABOUT A YEAR AGO YOU CAN CHOOSE BETWEEN GOING ON ADULT TRIPS (18-62 YEARS OLD) OR ELDER TRIPS (62 PLUS YEARS OLD.) -
THE BIGGEST BENEFIT AT 62 IS THAT YOU GET A HIGHER STIPEND CHECK THAN THE REGULAR ADULT STIPEND (18 -62 YEARS OLD.)
THERE PROBABLY ARE OTHER BENEFITS I MAY HAVE MISSED, BUT I THINK I MENTIONED THE MAJOR ONES.
TRIBAL MEMBERS WHAT DO YOU THINK, SHOULD SOME OF THE BENEFITS THAT ARE GIVEN AT 62 BE GIVEN TO THE 55 YEAR OLD ELDERS?
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, YOUR 55 AND YOUR AN ELDER.

Good article - I think the Tribe should have had a say about the change of designation of the subsidized housing at Fort Hill, from "elder housing" to "Assisted" living...and also to giving up a rentable apartment to make FREE space for Interim [that is a company that supplies "companions" and "aides" to help people remain in their own living quarters as long as they can before being forced to move to a nursing home]staff. The Tribe has yet to be told what new parameters will have to be met prior to being considered for an Elder...oops!...an Assisted living apartment. As the "Baby Boomer" bulge rolls down upon Tribal demographics, we should consider making providing more subsidized housing available to that age group...who may now have to prove having handicaps [or not - does anyone know?]for entry onto the waiting list for these apartments.
YOU'RE fifty five and you are an Elder! You get to go on Elders' Trips but you don't get sent the notices - as that little news letter also has services listed only for Elders who are 62 or over - Natinihak
