BROKENWING EDITORIALS HAS BEEN GOING TO THE TOP OF WINTER GARAGE, EVERY FEW DAYS TAKING PICTURES OF THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEW HOTEL (PROJECT HORIZON.) WE HAVE BEEN TAKING THE PHOTOGRAPHS SO TRIBAL MEMBERS CAN SEE THE PROGRESS OF THE HOTEL BEING BUILT.
WHEN WE FIRST STARTED GOING TO THE WINTER GARAGE, WE ASKED SECURITY PERSONAL IF IT WAS OKAY FOR US AS TRIBAL MEMBERS TO TAKE PICTURES. WE WERE TOLD WE COULD.
ON THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2008 I WENT TO THE FIRST LEVEL OF THE WINTER GARAGE AND TOOK SOME PICTURES. A SECURITY CAR CAME AND SAID HE HAD TOLD US IT WAS OKAY TO TAKE PICTURES BUT NOW PEOPLE WERE NOT ALLOWED TO TAKE PICTURES. I SAID WHO SHOULD I TALK TO? HE TOLD ME WHO TO TALK TO. I ASKED IF I SHOULD GO TO THE TRIBAL COUNCIL AND MAYBE GET A LETTER OR SOMETHING SO I COULD CONTINUE TO TAKE PICTURES. HE SAID WHAT IS YOUR NAME. I GAVE IT TO HIM. HE THEN SAID IT OVER THE CARS RADIO. I THOUGHT MAYBE I AM GETTING IN SOME KIND OF TROUBLE. ABOUT THIRTY SECONDS LATER OVER THE RADIO SOMETHING WAS SAID. THE SECURITY PERSON SAID, IT'S OKAY, YOU CAN TAKE AS MANY PICTURES AS YOU WANT. STAY AS LONG AS YOU LIKE. IT WAS A VERY CONGENIAL CONVERSATION. THE SECURITY MAN ACTED VERY PROFESSIONAL. IT WAS A PLEASURE DEALING WITH HIM.
IT IS GREAT TO SEE THAT SECURITY BELIEVES IN THE FREE PRESS AND DID THE RIGHT THING. IT ALSO IS A COMPLIMENT TO OUR GOVERNMENT WHO IS SUPPORTING THE RIGHTS OF A FREE PRESS. THIS IS QUITE DIFFERENT THEN WHAT HAPPENED THE VERY NEXT DAY AT FORT HILL ELDER HOUSING BETWEEN THE EDITOR OF FEATHER NEWS AND THE DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS.
